Ahoi Matrose, Matrose Ahoi! Die Sehnsucht in die Ferne, sie rief mich fort auf See und ich schaute hier den Frieden und fand den Sturm. Männer unter sich, sie sind gut und böse, lieben einander und hassen sich, sie pflechten die Taue und klopfen den Rost, sie führen fein die Nadel wenn sie einen Knopf annähen und sie schlagen derb mit dem Hammer auf die Maschine, daß das Rad sich schneller drehe, sie trinken und singen, tanzen und sind fröhlich, traurig und einsam, lustig und frei, Frauen in den Träumen, oder auch nicht, sie sind Kameraden, und zählen ihre Tage.

"Obwohl ich nur noch wenige Zeit zum Schlafen haben wuerde, ging ich an Deck und kletterte auf den Signalmast. Ich schaute über die rollige See. Das Schiff schwank tief, langsam, auf und ab, hin und her. Ich sah herueber zum Tender Werra. Alles war ruhig und schien zu schlafen. Der Wind blies mir ins Gesicht...."
